Natale 1982.

Natale 2021.

Christmas 1982. In Poland, a fir tree is cut down and donated to H.H. Pope John Paul II to become the first Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square.

Christmas 2021. A hundred-year-old fir tree is cut down in Trentino. For the 40th time a monumental tree is sacrificed for a use that cannot be said to be linked to tradition but rather to the desire to impress with grandeur.

We express our great sadness for what has been done repeatedly and make a heartfelt plea to ensure that not one more tree will be lost. We are simply asking that you heed the words of H.H. Pope Francis who, in his encyclical Laudato Sì, could not have been more incisive. Following, you may read some excerpts.

(202) “Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change.”

The Vatican cannot escape this challenge, on which the future of our children and grandchildren will depend.

The example of ecological conversion that can be delivered to the entire world, through the eco-sustainable choice of saving a real fir tree for 2022, has a symbolic and global significance.

(216) “More than in ideas or concepts as such, I am interested in how such a spirituality can motivate us to a more passionate concern for the protection of our world“.

That’s exactly what we’re asking for, to fuel a passion for caring for the world through a signal that won’t be able to go unnoticed.

(217) “It must be said that some committed and prayerful Christians, with the excuse of realism and pragmatism, tend to ridicule expressions of concern for the environment. Others are passive; they choose not to change their habits and thus become inconsistent.”

We would like the Vatican to avoid stumbling into inconsistency next Christmas, by providing an exquisite example of change to the entire world.
